Conditions

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Leakage with coughing, sneezing, exercise or intimacy due to reduced urethral support.

Urge Incontinence

Overactive bladder with sudden, hard-to-control urges and involuntary leakage.

Mixed Incontinence

A combination of stress and urge symptoms requiring a tailored approach.

Understanding Urinary Incontinence & Treatments

Urinary leakage may occur during effort (stress incontinence) when urethral support and sphincter closure are reduced, or spontaneously with urgency (urge incontinence) due to bladder overactivity or neurological causes. Mixed incontinence combines both.

We offer a full spectrum of options: non-surgical therapies (intravaginal laser, radiofrequency and electromagnetic pelvic-floor stimulation) and day-case surgical solutions when indicated. Your plan is confirmed after consultation — and, where appropriate, urodynamic testing.

I came across the Bader Medical Institute through a social media advertisement for the Emsella treatment. I decided to make an appointment and everyone I’ve dealt with has been very professional but also supportive and empathetic to me. They always have time for my questions and if I need to rearrange my appointment they have always been able to accommodate me. My therapist Charoula is the most helpful person, she always has a smile on her face and offered to stay late for me when I could only make a very late appointment time. The treatment has been amazing and I would definitely recommend Charoula and the Bader Institute.

I cannot rate the Bader Medical Institute Of London enough. Seeing Dr. Maria Papadopoulou was the best decision I've ever made. Her whole team are amazing, their care is first class and has always helped me with whatever health problem I had. If you are struggling with Gynaecology issues, I highly recommend. Thank you ☺️

FAQs

What is Stress Urinary Incontinence?

Stress urinary incontinence is involuntary leakage that occurs with coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercise or intercourse. It’s typically due to reduced support of the urethra and weaker sphincter closure during effort.

What is Urge Incontinence and what causes it?

Urge incontinence (overactive bladder) involves sudden, compelling urges to pass urine followed by leakage. Causes can include bladder overactivity, neurological conditions (e.g. spinal cord injury, stroke), or other irritative factors. It may affect all ages.

What is Mixed Incontinence?

Mixed incontinence means you experience both stress and urge symptoms. Management addresses both components for best results.

How is a urodynamic test performed?

Urodynamics uses advanced equipment to assess bladder and urethral function. You’ll be asked to attend with a comfortably full bladder. Measurements of flow and pressures are recorded and analysed by computer. Please allow around 2–3 hours; results are reviewed with you the same day.

What is the recommended treatment for Stress Urinary Incontinence?

Many cases are successfully treated with minimally invasive surgery (typically 30–45 minutes, day-case) using a mid-urethral support (tape/sling). Most patients resume everyday activities shortly afterwards. Non-surgical options may also be considered depending on your assessment.

How is the surgical procedure performed for SUI?

Through a small incision in the vaginal wall, a lightweight, antibacterial tape is positioned beneath the urethra to restore support. This gently elevates and aligns the urethra, improving closure during effort and reducing leakage.

How is Urge Incontinence treated?

Management is primarily pharmacological and behavioural (bladder training, pelvic-floor therapy). The plan and duration depend on severity and response, with close clinical follow-up.
